How consumer electronics are a base for consumerism

It is no secret that the American economy relies on consumerism to keep it going and nowhere is this reflected more than in the consumer electronics business. This consumerism has a huge impact on American society and the nation's economic strength. A lot of people have run up a lot of debt to buy the latest and greatest in electronics.

In large part consumer electronics form a base for consumerism because of the fact that new products are constantly being developed. There is always something new being produced by the electronics manufacturers which of course requires that people continue to buy new products. The makers of these products invest huge amounts of money to create new products for people to buy for the specific purpose of ensuring that they always have something new to sell. The result is that customers have to spend ever increasing amounts in order to remain up to date with the latest products are on offer.

Not only are manufacturers constantly producing new products for people to buy but they are constantly improving on the ones that they already produce. As a result you can be sure that next year's model will be an improvement over the existing one. This is done for the purpose of reducing the useful life of a product so that people will replace them more frequently than they otherwise would. This has created a situation in which very few people hold onto electronics products for more than a couple of years.

One of the issues that has come up with the approach that electronics makers have taken is that in a lot of cases the improvements that they make to the products are pretty minimal. Often consumers will feel pressure to replace their product with a new one even though the one that they have will be just as useful as the one that they are replacing it with. This is why you usually find electronics products with features that nobody ever uses. They are there to offer something new to the consumers. Even though they will never use the features they still find it necessary to buy the new product.

The consumerism that has resulted from the way that consumer electronics has been good for business for the makers of the products but it has not really been good for the consumers. These days most people will spend thousands of dollars every year on electronics in order to make sure that they have the latest offerings. This is a big part of the reason that so many people have debt problems, they are spending a large amount of money on products that they really don't need. Unfortunately this situation is unlikely to change any time soon as there is a great deal of money to be made with the current system.
